Let the Christmas (party) season commence!!!

Hi folks,

This last week at work has been so stressful and busy but it’s the run up to Christmas and as you can imagine – the start of the many work (and personal) Christmas parties I’m due to attend. This time last year, I wasn’t exactly doing the most glamorous of jobs back in Wales (see here) so its fair to say the Christmas party I attended last year wasn’t as much a Christmas party as it was an excuse to get drunk and give my liver a good battering.

A bit of a sidetrack here but I just remembered that I’ve not even begun Christmas shopping yet. I do tend to leave it till the last minute anyway so there’s nothing out of the ordinary there but for some reason, I’m starting to stress about it. I say stress but it’s more like I remember every three days that I’ve still not started and I try to look on Amazon/Selfridges/Play.com and eventually get distracted by the shoes or bags, which I end up never buying. It’s a vicious cycle.

Anyway, after a stressful week, I was looking forward to one of many Christmas parties and it was going to be a laid back event with lots of friends and promised to be a good night. I showed up at the event which was pretty swanky in my old jeans, heels, and a Beatles shirt I got from a thrift shop in Camden and a nice little jacket (lazy and laid back – just how I like it! lol) and I felt like the bees knees… until I walked into the room and realised it was a black tie event! Oh the shame... *shakes head* I literally have no idea how this happened.

I’m not the kind of person that doesn’t take dress codes seriously and I even asked a few times this week about what the dress code for the event was! It was so cliché I just couldn’t help but laugh (not all out crazy laughter – more like an inside laughter) I already looked out of place standing at the entrance of the venue dressed like I was going to a concert or off to do my laundry - there was no way I was going to let people think I was crazy as well.

I looked at my invitation, which made no mention of a dress code thought it did mention a champagne reception and a nice 5 course meal. Retrospectively, the fact that it was a 5 course meal should have sent alarm bells ringing in my head but hey ho… After about a minute of laughing and trying to compose my self, I decided there was only one thing to do – go in there, have a great time and drink my faux pas away! I did get a few (okay, more than ‘a few’) strange looks but all in all, it ended up being a fantastic night!

Mega-Super-Duper Busy/Knackered

OH-DEAR-GOODNESS! I am the epitome of tired! I’ve been living out of the suitcase for the last week and working crazy hours hence the lack of blogging for which I apologise… profusely! For what its worth, here’s what I have called home for the last few weeks –
Seemed nice at first but after a few weeks of this, I am so sick and tired of this room! I need my own bed! *sob* lol!

I did get to go home over the weekend though (yaaaaay!) and I headed straight for the new Westfield Shopping centre in Stratford (I can’t help myself! I soooooo shoulda gone to bed…)
One thing’s for sure though – I NEED A DRINK!!!

Lazy weekend

Oh-Dear-Goodness!!! *sigh* This has been another hectic week! I was so knackered by the Thursday, I actually said ‘Thank you’ to the coffee vending machine. In all fairness to me, this was preceded by a gargantuan fight against drowsiness, which eventually saw me head-butting my computer screen. Thankfully, I got to finish early on Friday but all I just wanted to do was go to sleep by the time I was done.

In other news, it’s the Thames Festival in London this weekend… at least, I think that’s what it’s called!. Well, whatever it’s a huge street party and I plan on breaking out of my pajamas this weekend and going into town to see what’s going on. I heard the fireworks last year were amazing and I’ve arranged a meeting with friends for drinks and dinner.

Also, I got a call of my old boyfriend, Thom (see here), turns out he’s heading to London for a couple of days next week and wants to meet up – and NO, not in the way you’re thinking, just as friends. I’m not one to hold grudges (too much effort!) though I will blame my sleep-drought this week on the fact that we’ll be meeting up for dinner when he’s in town. I’m starting to feel like a true Londoner now – showing the out-of-towners around. I’ll keep you all posted.
And No! There’ll be none of this…lol!

Awkward!!!

Rule of thumb! When you’re having a conversation with some one (or a group of people) and you suddenly smell someone’s farted – ignore it! Never ever acknowledge it or this could end up being one of the most awkward conversations ever. Last week at work, the exact thing happened to me (And before you ask - No, I did not fart, someone else did...lol).

I would typically ignore this except the smell kept getting stronger and stronger and I just had to stop and say something – though half out of fear that they’d think it was me (don’t ask why! I have no idea…lol). I asked if anyone else could smell it and everyone else said they couldn’t at which point I let out a nervous laugh/shriek (way to go banshee) and said maybe it was all in my mind.

The conversation after that was painful as one of the girls I was talking to thought it could have been the fact that she had been soaked in the rain on her way in and her coat might smell a bit funky (you know – that ‘wet dog’ smell though I knew that was not what I could smell). The conversation just went painful and awkward from then on with me trying to pretend I hadn’t smelt anything in the first place... *cringes* Never again… *shakes head* Never…

Meet the colleagues

Right! As you all know, I just started working recently and I figured I’d give you guys a little taster of some of the more 'interesting' people I work with. Without further ado – meet the colleagues:-

Tee (not her real name of course): Fantastic lady! The best of the bunch! Nice, vivacious and very hard working. She’s shaved off her eyebrows and painted them back on almost about an inch too high so she constantly has a surprised look on her face. Down to earth and most likely to cover up for you if you off “sick” (i.e. can’t come in due to massive hangover… not that I’d ever do that…again - Disclaimer: I've never done that in this new job!)

Eff (also not her real name, okay, by this point, I’m sure you’ll have figured out that I’m not gonna use people’s real names): Irritating, pretentious with rare moments of brilliance. The kind of person who has an inane ability to say the most stupid things all the time and yet every so often comes up with fantastic joke/comment that draws you back in. At least with her you’ll never be ambivalent.
Pee1: Crazy crazy crazy crazy (did I mention crazy) Irish guy! The things he comes up with are insane. Most likely to get you in trouble (unintentionally might I add!). Still it’s always a welcome type of trouble! Needs to figure out what’s appropriate to wear to the office though (white blazer, bright green shirt and shiny silver trousers are NOT appropriate office wear!). Saying that, I always look forward to seeing what he wears to the office. Makes a refreshing change in the sea of Black and Grey suits.
Pee2: Quiet office mouse… that is till you get a drink or two down her and suddenly, she has a potty mouth that would make even the maddest sailor blush. Why is it the quiet ones that are always full of surprises? And after her fifth drink, she’ll tell you things about sex you never knew existed or were even possible! In between sporadic fits of laughter, I have make occasional trips to the bathroom to write some of it down. It’s like sexual comedy gold. (Bet she thinks I have a weak bladder with the amount of times I have run off to the bathroom laughing…) She’s smaller than Kylie Minogue so takes very little for her to get drunk… (Lucky cow!)
Bee: Office bore. Tells the most awful, sleep-inducing stories ever! I have actually nodded off while he was talking to me once. Thankfully, I don’t think he noticed… now that I think of it, I kinda wish he did. At least maybe he’d get the message and stop coming over to tell me tales of his great ‘pumpkin weekend’. On the plus side, he’s a genuinely nice guy so as long as he doesn’t insist on recounting old tales, generally nice to be around.

Aay: Moaner… You could almost see a dark cloud hanging around his head every day! I find this tedious and avoid at all costs.

Boss Lady: Hardly ever in the office so hard to tell what she’s like. All I know is she has a crazy hyena laugh which you can head across the entire office but generally seems like a nice lady. I hear she’s the office gossip queen which makes sense as the first thing she ever said to me was how some intern from the years ago slept with her old manager at the office Christmas party and the intern is now back here full time. (I fully intend on finding out who said intern is!!! I’ve already figured out who her old manager is… And as I said before, I’ll never actively spread office gossip but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna miss hearing about it!!!)
That’s it so far. Still new so still finding my way around and getting to know more people. Needless to say, I’ll keep you all posted!!! Till next time…

Pros and cons…

…of being employed

Pros
- Money! I know where my next pay cheque is coming from – literally! No more street corners for me... (Just joking!!!)
- Purpose!!!: It’s so nice to wake up in the morning and actually know what I’m going to be doing. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve created random ‘fun’ tasks for myself; which actually end up being not so fun!(Understatement of the year!) A challenge to clean your bathroom in under 10 minutes is NOT fun! It’s torturous and you’ll smell like bleach for the rest of the day.
- No more morning/daytime telly: Thanks goodness!!! I’m such a glutton for punishment when it comes to this. I sit there thinking how awful it is and yet never change the channel and go back for more the next day. I actually go to a point where I ‘enjoyed’ Jeremy Kyle (*hangs head in shame*). I had to stop watching telly for a while when I caught myself QVC for almost an hour!!! (Nothing against QVC but watching it for an hour is a bit much…)
- Sexy Business Outfits: I love getting dressed up for work!!! I always try to over do it... some days 'slutty secretary' (hehehe!) other days 'haute couture'... I imagine I’ll get bored of this pretty soon though but it’s like playing dress up! Love it!!!

Cons
- Lack of sleep: I miss it so much!!! *sobs*
- Coffee: This is like daily punishment for not getting enough sleep! (Why does it have to be so bitter?!) Each sip is torture!
- Eating cold and boring lunches: I can’t binge anymore on pizza and chicken wings (and cheese on toast and huge dollops of creamy pasta and ice cream and sticky toffee pudding – okay you get the point, I’m a binge eater!) I’m sat on my tush all day barely moving or exercising so the pounds are gonna pile on if I don’t watch what I eat. I’m really trying to be good here but it’s so hard – I gave up the other day and binged on a whole Nandos chicken, chips and rice and even had dessert too! I felt so incredibly guilty but at the same time I felt so fantastic from all that good good good food! (It was a very confusing day for me… hehe!)
- Office gossip: I cannot be bothered with this; I won’t spread stuff about other people. I usually won’t listen either – unless it’s really interesting in which case – Dish! Dish!! Dish!!!
- Walking around in heels: Sore feet – nuff said!

Till next time…

Lola vs Evil Shop Lady

Right; since arriving in London, I’ve been searching for the job of my dreams (I’m thinking something in consulting – this job title is generic enough to mean doing anything in any job sector). The job hunt has been easier said that done so in the meanwhile, I have had to take up a few temporary jobs to maintain the “Keep Lola Alive/Bread and Baked Beans/Alcohol” fund at healthy levels. A pat on the back for me actually as this has been one of my fairly good ideas. It leaves me with a constant “cushion” in my bank account… not enough to keep me in endless supplies of D&G, Prada and Louboutins (Boy, do I wish it did) but enough so I don’t have to have to end up with a strict diet of stale bread and tap water.
It was during one of these temporary jobs that I ended up working in a shoe store in Central London.  I did a pretty decent job so they kept having me back whenever they were short staffed and I didn’t mind this job except for the store supervisor who seemed to have it in for me. Thankfully, the store manager (who outranked her) made all the hiring decisions else I imagine she’d have kicked me out long ago. I guess my indifference must have also frustrated her – for me, it was a temp job something to do for a paycheck and for her, this was her career (nothing wrong with either points of views in my opinion). Anyway, I arrived 5 minutes late that morning (not my fault, the bus had to take a diversion) and she spent the next 10 minutes barraging me insults of which I was thinking “Er… hello? I was 5 minutes late!” Plus it wasn’t my fault and how in the world, did it make sense to have a go at me for 10 minutes for being 5 minutes late? In what world of business did this make sense? This put me in a foul mood all morning and I barely mumbled hello to Tanya who was one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. One of those positive people whose sunny disposition infects even the most cynical of characters. On our tea break, I stepped out with Tanya to grab some fresh air and a can of coke (Diet coke, of course… Okay, I lie. Full Fat coke) which only made my mood worse as I spilled some coke on myself (plus side:- I was wearing a black top so no stains, downside:- that sticky feeling dried coke leaves). Great! I had to go wash it up and carried around a wet patch for the better part of the morning.
As the day dragged on, I managed to (unhealthily) repress my frustrations and get on with work till I noticed a lady causing some commotion while being served by Tanya. (Actually, I take that back. She was no lady!) Next thing I know, Tanya bursts out crying and I rush over to console Tanya and while the supervisor escorted Tanya to the staff room, I was left to deal with the customer. Just great! *sigh*
In less than two minutes of being with this customer, I could see why Tanya had been crying and I refused to show any emotion, “I’m gonna take the high road” I told myself… that is till she turned around to me and  said “Why are you so incompetent? I asked for those shoes in brown!” (lying cow. She didn’t!) and she topped it off with a sly “Oh, sod it, just go back on the boat you came in on and comeback when you’ve learnt to speak English properly”… (Of which, I’m sure you can attest, that my English language skills are decent enough). She proceeded to walk away from me at which point I stuck my foot out and tripped her. And boy did she go flying! I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard in all my life (in my head of course. Not out loud). I had quickly gone from being ‘extremely angry’ to ‘overwhelming exhilarated’ and then I took a little detour to ‘fear. (What if she wanted to fight? I quickly sized up the distance to the exits to see how quickly I could run away. No luck with that, I’m such a slow runner – one again, note to self – EXERCISE MORE). I was still thinking “What the hell did I just do” when some weird instinct took root in me and I hurried to help her up and insisted that she must have tripped on the shoes when she walked off – she was too stunned to say anything and before she could, I walked away to the staff room to get my things and get the hell outta there. I was gonna be fired anyway, might as well make a run for it before they did more than fired me.
On my way out, I bumped into the supervisor who called me into her office. I was petrified, I could find another temporary job of course but I did not want to go to jail for tripping a customer (funny how irrational your thinking gets when fuelled by adrenaline with a hint of fear). Almost like I was being remote control, I robot-marched into the office and I figured I would try my best to lie my way out it till I notice that there were video cameras in the office which would have been an ample view of what I had just done. I waited to be reprimanded but instead, I got handed my timesheets to sign and with a knowing smile and a what I thought was a wink (or could have been a nerve twitch, I’m still not sure till this day), she said “ Are you off home? That’s fine, it’s near the end of the day anyway. Have a great evening and see you tomorrow”. I’d never gotten so much as a kind word or a hello from her so her saying that to me was the equivalent of a stranger walking up to you and saying “I love you! I wanna have your babies!!!” – unnerving, awkward and yet somehow flattering. I know at that point that she’d seen it all and must have thought the customer deserved it. (Sneaky cow, who knew she had it in her, eh?)
On my way out, I walked past the (by this point, now aptly re-named) ‘Evil Shop Lady’ paying for her shoes. She seemed strangely subdued and yet still shocked, like she was still unsure what had just happened and as I walked past, she looked at me and I gave her what (in my mind anyway) was a “knowing look”… (knowing me, it was possibly more like a “deranged look” than anything else) and I walked out of the store.
Me - 1, Evil Shop Lady – 0! All’s right with the world again.
